Finding your nearest Public Health Centre in the Valencia Region

(If you are looking for a more general explanation of how to register for public healthcare in Spain as a British national, click on this link instead for our explanation).

The Valencia Regional Government (Comunidad Valenciana) covers the provinces of Alicante, Castellón and Valencia, including the Costa Blanca and Costa Azahar. To help you find your nearest public health centre in those areas, continue reading this page. (To see the same details as below in Spanish, click here)

  1. With SIP card number (acceso por tarjeta SIP)

The Valencian regional health card (to prove you are registered for public healthcare) is known in the region as a SIP card. On the following link from the regional government you can search for your nearest health centre details by entering your SIP number, if you have it (and you are registered for healthcare) and by entering your date of birth.

www.san.gva.es/es/web/portal-del-paciente/buscador-recursos  (acceso por tarjeta SIP)

There is also an App you can download to your mobile phone to find details and keep track of your health records  https://www.san.gva.es/es/web/app-gva-mes-salut (SIP number required).

  1. By entering a local address (acceso por domicilio)

On the same link (www.san.gva.es/es/web/portal-del-paciente/buscador-recursos) you can also enter your address instead to find nearest public health centre details. Choose your Province (Provincia) then town/village (Población) then write street name (e.g.  for Calle Verde, write just VERDE; for Avenida del Mar, write DEL MAR etc.) and a house/building number.

If you do not have a SIP card (or cannot use a neighbour’s SIP number to check local centre details instead) or cannot search by address:

  1. List of centres in your area

The Valencia Region is divided up into health districts (departamentos). These normally consist of one district public hospital and primary care health centres. Each district operates relatively independently of the others. There is not one easily searchable list regularly updated (other than points 2 and 3 above) for all districts together. We are providing you with the sources of information that we believe are kept most up to date for the districts to ensure you get the latest contact details.

Important Note: Your nearest doctor could be based at a ‘Centro de Salud’ (CS), ‘Centro Sanitario Integrado’ (CSI) or a ‘Consultorio’.   A ‘Centro de Salud’  or ‘Centro Sanitario Integrado’ is a larger primary care/medical centre.  A ‘Consultorio Local’ or ‘Consultorio Auxiliar’ is a local surgery with shorter opening times serving smaller areas and dependent on nearby centres for some specialist services. Scan the lists for all three types to see whichever location is nearest to you.

If your area of the Valencia region is not covered above (including cities of Valencia and Alicante),  more information on local health districts is available by clicking here and then on the ‘Departmentos de Salud’ button.

A note on interpreting or translation into English during your visit: There is no automatic interpretation service available in English in the Valencia region. Some health centres have English-speaking staff, especially in areas with more foreign residents. It is advisable to make a first visit with a Spanish speaker and ask for the availability of English-speaking doctors. Staff will always do their best to help in either case. Click on this link to see more information on this subject, including a link  to search for voluntary organisations in your area that may be able to help by accompanying you to a medical visit or by suggesting interpreters.
